BFT hinge and roller replacement in Los Angeles typically runs $220 – $430 installed, depending on whether you’re replacing a single worn roller or a full hinge set and track guide assembly. We stock BFT-compatible hinge and roller hardware on the truck, and most single-gate jobs are done in one visit, same day. The way most owners discover the problem: the gate starts dragging mid-swing, makes a grinding scrape, or sags enough that the latch misses the striker by half an inch.
If you’ve got a BFT swing gate that’s suddenly fighting itself to open, this page tells you exactly what failed, what it costs, and whether it’s safe to touch before we arrive.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
The hinge and roller work we do covers BFT’s residential swing gate lines most common in LA: the Deimos BT series, the Phobos N/S, the single-leaf Kustos and Kustos Ultra, and the older Sub line still running on plenty of Hollywood Hills driveways. Roller replacement also applies to BFT sliding gate openers where the guide roller (the wheel that carries the gate along the track) is integral to the opener’s travel path.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha we run into constantly: BFT hinge bolt patterns changed between the Sub generation and the Deimos/Phobos lines. The newer Deimos hinges use a 4-bolt plate with 80mm vertical spacing; older Sub hinges are 3-bolt with narrower spacing. Measure your plate before ordering anything online – a lot of “universal” hinge kits on Amazon are drilled for neither. We match the hinge by serial plate photo or on-site measurement, and we carry both OEM BFT hardware and quality aftermarket equivalents that are mill-spec or better for LA’s salt-air-in-Venice, 105-degree-in-Van-Nuys reality.
One thing to know: Calder Gate Repair Los Angeles is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with BFT the manufacturer and don’t claim to be. We’re just the shop that sees their failures week in and week out and keeps the right parts on the shelf.

Signs Your BFT Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing
- The gate sags at the free end. When the bottom hinge pin wears, the gate drops. You’ll see the latch plate scrape, and the gate may need to be kicked to latch. Fixing the hinge before the leaf drags is what keeps the actuator alive – once the operator is pushing a sagging gate, the motor runs hot and the gearbox follows the hinge into the grave.
- Screech or grind when the gate moves. This is usually a hardened roller bearing on a sliding gate, or a dry, wallowed hinge pin on a swing gate. Sound is the first sign; by the time it becomes a thump, the roller has flat-spotted and is chewing the track.
- The gate stutters or hesitates mid-travel. A binding roller or seized hinge pin creates resistance spikes. The BFT control board reads that as an obstacle (it thinks a child is in the path) and reverses. Owners call it ‘the gate is haunted.’ It’s not the board. The board is doing its job.
- The gate tips or wobbles when you push it by hand. Worn hinge pins allow lateral play. In LA’s dry summer months you’ll hear it creak; in the coastal fog zones (Playa del Rey, San Pedro), corrosion on the hinge barrel accelerates the wear.
- Visible play when you rock the gate sideways. If the leaf moves more than a quarter-inch side to side at the hinge post, the pin and barrel are done. Every cycle after this point is the motor compensating for mechanical slop, and BFT motors aren’t cheap to replace.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here are our real Los Angeles price ranges for BFT hinge and roller replacement:
- Single hinge replacement (swing gate): $220 – $300 installed
- Full hinge set replacement (one leaf, 2 hinges): $280 – $430 installed depending on gate weight and hinge spec
- Sliding gate guide roller replacement: $180 – $260 installed
- Combined roller + track adjustment: $240 – $330 installed
The range depends on gate weight, whether we need to lift and brace the leaf, and whether the hinge is a standard Deimos/Phobos pattern or the older Sub-style that needs redrilling. Parts and labor are always separated on the invoice. And the price we quote is the price you pay – we don’t do “it got more complicated” invoices. The written price before work starts is standard on every job, including a 365-day written guarantee: if that hinge or roller fails within a year, we’re back out at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. You can safely diagnose a bad hinge or roller at home: rock the gate, look for slop in the pin, run the gate and listen for the grind. No special tools, no risk. What you should not do is try to replace a hinge on a live swing gate by yourself. The gate is under load. When that bottom hinge pin comes out, a 200 – 400 lb leaf becomes a lever with the motor as the pivot. We’ve watched experienced guys get pinned. Even on a sliding gate, the guide roller is under lateral tension, and releasing it without properly supporting the leaf can drop the gate off its track. This is one of those jobs where the value of a trained technician isn’t skill – it’s having done the dance enough times to know which bolt to loosen last.
If you want to understand the work, call us and ask. Nico’s signature move is walking an owner through the failure on video before a tool gets picked up. If you want it done without a trip to urgent care, (213) 322-1415 is the number.
FAQs
In LA’s climate, expect 6 – 10 years from OEM BFT hinges and 4 – 7 years from rollers, with coastal properties in Santa Monica and Playa del Rey landing on the short end because salt air accelerates bearing wear and hinge pin corrosion. Inland neighborhoods like Sherman Oaks and Pasadena see the lifespan stretch longer, but 100+ degree summers still harden the nylon bushings faster than manufacturers claim. Like everything on a gate, the part fails fastest when the gate is used often.
A roller with a removable bearing usually can’t be saved once the bearing is flat-spotted, but a hinge pin can sometimes be replaced without changing the hinge plates if the barrel isn’t wallowed out. We make that call on-site: if the pin moves cleanly and the plate is still true, it’s a $90 – $130 pin replacement instead of a $280+ hinge replacement. Call (213) 322-1415 and we’ll tell you which one you’re looking at based on what the gate is doing.
A single hinge or roller swap is a 45 – 90 minute job once we’re on site. A full hinge set on a heavy gate takes about two hours including lifting, realigning the leaf, and verifying the actuator’s travel curve is still clean. We always test the gate through full cycles before leaving, which is where cheaper repair outfits cut corners – and why we include the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing.
We stock BFT-compatible hinge and roller parts on the truck, covering Deimos, Phobos, Kustos, and common Sub-line patterns. If your gate is a rarer BFT variant or a custom iron leaf with oversized pin barrels, we source the part same-day from our local LA suppliers and schedule install within 48 hours. We also stock hardware for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems, so if your opener needs attention while we’re there, we handle it in the same visit.
If your BFT gate is scraping, sagging, or fighting itself, call (213) 322-1415. You’ll get a real human on the line, an honest range before we dispatch, and a written price before any work starts. Tell Nico what it’s doing wrong and he’ll tell you what it actually costs to fix it – before he picks up a tool.
