If you’re looking for Viking hinge and roller replacement in Los Angeles, here’s the short answer: we stock Viking-compatible hinges and rollers on our trucks, and most replacements run $145 – $310 installed depending on your gate’s size and how many rollers need swapping. Same-day service is available in most LA neighborhoods when we have the part on hand, which we usually do.
Most owners discover the problem the same way: the gate starts dragging on the track, screeches when it opens, or the panel sags so badly it catches the ground. By the time you’re searching for replacement parts, the roller bearings have usually worn flat or the hinge has developed enough play that the gate leans. You’ll notice it most on hot afternoons when the metal expands and every little bit of wear gets louder.
We’re an independent service company, not affiliated with Viking, but we work on these openers and gates daily across Los Angeles. If your Viking gate is grinding or sagging, the fix is usually faster and cheaper than you think. Here’s everything worth knowing before you pick up the phone.
Which Viking Models This Applies To
Viking gate openers pair with a few common gate configurations, and the hinge and roller setup depends on whether you have a slide gate or a swing gate. Slide gates – the ones that roll sideways on a track – are where we do most hinge and roller replacements. Viking’s slide gate models like the Viking L-3, G-5, and the heavier R-6 series all use carriages and rollers that ride on a steel V-track or round rail, and the hinges at the carriage mount take a beating over time.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people don’t know: Viking doesn’t make the hinges and rollers themselves. They build the operator and the control board. The gate hardware – wheels, hinges, track – typically comes from a gate fabricator, which means the exact size you need depends on your gate’s weight and the track profile, not just “Viking.” A roller for a 300-pound driveway gate is a different diameter and bearing type than one for a 1,200-pound commercial gate.
When you call us, we’ll ask you to check two things: the diameter of the roller wheel (usually 2″, 3″, or 4″) and whether the hinge bolts are welded or bolted to the gate frame. That tells us which part to bring. For Viking slide gates specifically, we stock 2″ and 3″ sealed-bearing rollers, plus replacement hinge plates and carriage bolts – and if your gate fabricator used a heavier commercial setup, we can have the 4″ rollers loaded in under two days.
As for OEM versus aftermarket: Viking doesn’t sell branded gate rollers, so “OEM” isn’t really a thing for this part. What matters is the bearing quality. We use sealed-bearing rollers with grease-packed internals, which hold up far better in LA’s dust and sun than the cheap shielded ones that fail in eighteen months. If your original rollers lasted less than three years, the gate fabricator likely undersized them for the load.

Signs Your Viking Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing
- The gate screeches or squeals as it moves. That’s almost always dry or flat roller bearings. The bearing is sealed but the seal wears out, dust gets in, and the grease turns to paste. The noise is the bearing grinding on itself. By the time you hear it, the roller is done – oiling it won’t bring it back.
- The gate sags visibly at the free end. A hinge with worn bushings lets the gate panel droop, so the latch side sits lower than the hinge side. You’ll see daylight between the panel and the frame, or the gate scrapes the driveway on one side. That’s the hinge pin and bushing wearing together – common on heavy LA driveway gates after six to eight years.
- The gate jerks instead of rolling smoothly. Flat spots on rollers (from a gate sitting in one position through months of Santa Ana wind cycles) make the gate thump along the track rhythmically. Your Viking operator compensates, but the jerking puts extra load on the opener motor and gearbox. Fix the rollers before the operator takes a beating it doesn’t need to.
- The track looks chewed up or unevenly worn. When a roller seizes instead of spinning, the wheel drags on the track and grinds a flat channel into it. This is common on older Los Angeles properties with original track from the 1990s. If you replace the roller but leave a grooved track, the new roller fails faster – we’ll tell you if your track is still serviceable before quoting.
- The gate comes off the track or binds mid-travel. A hinge that’s cracked at the weld or pulled loose from the frame lets the whole panel shift sideways, which can pop the rollers off the rail. If this happens, stop using the gate immediately – a partially off-track gate can fall onto a car or a person. Call us and we’ll secure it before replacing the failed hardware.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Los Angeles, expect to pay between $145 and $310 for hinge and roller replacement on a typical residential Viking slide gate. That’s installed, including the parts and the labor. Here’s how it breaks down:
- Roller replacement only: $145 – $210 for replacing 2 – 4 rollers with sealed-bearing units, including track inspection and adjustment.
- Hinge replacement only: $110 – $190 for a single hinge plate and pin, welded or bolted depending on your gate frame.
- Hinge and roller combo: $230 – $310 for a full swap on a standard single-car driveway gate, including realigning the gate to the track and testing the Viking operator under load.
- Heavier gates or commercial setups: $350 and up, depending on gate weight, custom roller sizes, and whether we need to weld new hinge mounts.
Every quote is written and agreed before any work starts – the number you see on the estimate is the number on the invoice, period. We don’t add “discovery” charges after we open the gate up. The price covers parts, labor, track inspection, and realigning your gate so the Viking opener isn’t fighting a misaligned panel. And all of it falls under the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails within a year, Calder Gate Repair comes back at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can save yourself a service call by checking a couple of things first. Look at the rollers – if you can see the wheel is visibly flat, cracked, or wobbling on the axle, the diagnosis is confirmed. You can also grab the gate at the free end and lift. Movement of more than a quarter inch before the hardware engages means the hinge bushings are shot. That’s safe to check and it helps you know what you’re dealing with.
But here’s where DIY goes wrong on Viking gates. A slide gate panel weighs 300 to 800 pounds. When you unbolt a hinge or pull a roller, that weight has to go somewhere, and the someone holding it is usually standing exactly where the gate wants to fall. We’ve seen crushed fingers and broken toes from rollers that popped out under load. There’s also a real technique to getting the gate re-squared on the track so the Viking opener’s limit switch and obstruction sensor work correctly – get it wrong and the opener reverses mid-close or slams the stop. For hinge and roller work, call us at (213) 322-1415. The estimate is free, and we’ll confirm what needs replacing before we touch a bolt.
FAQs
In LA’s dry, dusty climate, sealed-bearing rollers typically last 4 to 8 years on a residential gate, though gates near the coast or in the Valley’s wind can shorten that. Hinges usually outlast rollers by a few years unless the gate is heavy or the original fabricator undersized the hardware. We replace rollers at about a two-to-one rate over hinges.
Rollers can’t be repaired – once the sealed bearing fails, the unit is done. Hinges sometimes can be rebuilt with new bushings and pins if the hinge plate itself is in good shape, but most of the time replacement is cheaper than the labor to rebuild. We’ll tell you which applies to your gate before quoting. Call (213) 322-1415 and tell us what your gate is doing, and we’ll give you an honest assessment.
The swap itself takes 60 to 90 minutes for a standard single-car slide gate. If we’re doing hinge and rollers together with track realignment, plan for about two hours. You’ll have a written price before we start, and we’ll test the Viking opener’s full open-close cycle before we leave.
Yes. We keep 2″ and 3″ sealed-bearing rollers and standard hinge plates loaded, and for unusual sizes we can typically have the part within two days. When you call, have the roller diameter ready if you can – it speeds everything up.
