We stock, weld, and fabricate Linear-compatible gate components at Calder Gate Repair Los Angeles, and most welding and fabrication jobs on Linear operators run $220 – $480 installed, including materials, labor, and our written guarantee. If your gate arm cracked at the weld, the hinge plate sheared off, or the operator bracket tore loose from the post, we can usually fabricate and install the replacement same-day. You’ll most likely discover this failure when the gate starts sagging, binding, or making a grinding noise that wasn’t there before.
Linear builds solid operators, but the steel around them works hard in Los Angeles. Between the salt air near the coast, the relentless sun in the Valley, and the daily open-close cycles on a busy driveway, welds fatigue. When they go, they go fast. The good news is this is fixable, and it’s a job we handle regularly. Nico Alvarez has been fabricating and fitting Linear-compatible gate hardware across LA for years, and every job gets a written price before we strike an arc.
Which Linear Models This Applies To
Linear’s gate operator line spans several generations, and the welding and fabrication work we do covers most of them. The models we see most often in Los Angeles driveways are the Linear LRA series swing gate operators, the Linear SLR/SLD slide gate operators, and the older Linear APeX series units still running on thousands of properties from San Pedro to Sylmar. The model number is printed on a metal tag riveted to the operator housing or on the inside of the control box cover.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners don’t know: Linear changed their mounting bolt patterns between the APeX generation and the current LRA/SLR line. If you have an older APeX unit and the mounting plate fails, you can’t simply bolt on a new-production bracket. The holes don’t line up, and forcing it weakens the whole assembly. We fabricate a bolt-on adapter plate for this exact situation. It’s a 20-minute fix that saves you from buying a whole new operator.
For most Linear gate hardware, we recommend OEM Linear parts when the part still exists. But for weld-on brackets, hinge points, and structural steel, a quality aftermarket component fabricated to spec is often stronger than the original, because we can add gusseting and use heavier-gauge steel where the factory design was marginal. If your gate is over 14 feet long or weighs more than 400 pounds, we’ll spec the heavier material automatically.

Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- Gate sags toward the free end, especially when open. This usually means the hinge-side weld or the operator mounting bracket is cracking. The gate’s weight is now riding on the weld, not the post, and it’ll only get worse.
- Grinding or popping noise during travel. A broken weld lets metal shift against metal. The pop is the two surfaces snapping past each other under load.
- The operator strains or trips its breaker. When a cracked weld allows misalignment, the Linear motor has to push harder to move the same gate. That extra amperage shows up as a tripped breaker or a hot motor.
- Visible rust weeping from a weld joint. Rust staining around a factory weld means the joint has already started to fail internally. In coastal Los Angeles neighborhoods like Playa del Rey or Long Beach-adjacent areas, this shows up faster.
- The gate drifts or settles after closing. If the limit switch is fine but the gate still creeps or drops, the steel structure is flexing. That flex is almost always a weld that’s cracked through.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Los Angeles, Linear welding and fabrication work typically runs $220 – $480 installed. Small bracket replacements and crack repairs sit at the lower end. Full hinge re-fabrication, operator mounting plate rebuilds, or gusseted reinforcement of a failing gate frame runs toward the top of that range. The price covers materials, grinding and prep, welding, paint or rust protection, and the labor to remove and re-install the affected hardware.
What drives the cost is access and material. A weld on a driveway gate with clear access is quick. A weld tucked between a stucco column and a wall takes longer. We use 1/8-inch to 1/4-inch steel plate depending on the load, and we tell you the grade before we cut anything. Every Linear welding job from Calder Gate Repair Los Angeles gets a written price before work starts, and the number you agree to is the number on the invoice. No surprises after the fact. The work itself is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise – if the weld fails within a year, we return and fix it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
Some things you can check yourself: look for visible cracks, rust bleeding from joints, or loose bolts where the operator mounts to the post. Tightening a loose bolt is fine. What you should not do is weld a gate that’s under tension or attempt to hold the gate up with a car jack while you work. A falling gate weighs hundreds of pounds, and an amateur weld on load-bearing steel can fail without warning. That’s not a scrape-you’ll-walk-off situation.
Welding also requires getting the metal clean, choosing the right rod or wire for the steel type, and controlling heat so you don’t warp the gate frame. Get any of it wrong and the part fails again, usually right where the old weld was. We do this work weekly across Los Angeles, and we bring the grinder, the welder, and a spare set of mounting hardware so the job is done in one visit. Call (213) 322-1415 and tell us what your gate is doing. Tell me what it’s doing wrong and I’ll tell you what it actually costs to fix it – before I pick up a tool.
FAQs
A properly welded and rust-protected repair on a Linear gate in Los Angeles typically lasts 10 to 15 years, which is longer than the operator itself in many cases. Coastal properties may need the rust protection refreshed sooner. Every weld we install is covered for a full year under our 365-Day Done Right Promise, so if it fails early, we come back free.
Yes, and in most cases we prefer to repair and reinforce the existing steel rather than replace it. Cracked welds get ground out and re-welded with added gussets where the original design was weak. This is faster and usually cheaper than full fabrication. Call (213) 322-1415 and describe what you’re seeing – we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s a repair or a replacement.
Most Linear welding and fabrication jobs take 1 to 2 hours on site, plus time for paint or rust coating to dry before the gate goes back into service. We schedule around your day, give you a live arrival window, and you’ll have a written price before we start. Same-day appointments are available for urgent failures where the gate won’t close.
We carry common Linear-compatible mounting brackets, hinge plates, steel stock, and welding supplies on our service vehicles across Los Angeles. For unusual sizes or OEM Linear parts that need to be ordered, we’ll tell you the timeline and price before anything is bought. We also keep parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls on board for mixed-brand properties.
If your Linear gate is sagging, grinding, or the mounting steel has failed, call Calder Gate Repair Los Angeles at (213) 322-1415.
